Move mode

Move mode (Ctrl h) rearranges panes without resizing them. Where Resize changes how big a pane is, Move changes where it sits. Direction keys shove the focused pane that way, swapping it with its neighbour; n and p walk it forward and backward through the layout order.

Swap two panes' positions

Move a pane around the layout without changing its size.

Build a three-pane layout
Focus one pane, press Ctrl h to enter Move mode
Press a direction key (say l) to shove it toward a neighbour and swap positions
Press Esc to leave Move mode
